Stories that shaped our year
Cycling at Sports Camp
July 6
“In our culture there are certain milestones in people’s lives and that ‘learn-to-ride’ story is certainly one of them,” Simonson said.
“That’s a massive milestone and some people in your program may have never had that opportunity. If we can come in and give them that life milestone, it’s a wonderful thing. Everyone should have that. We’re excited to help give them that.”
Making the most of SOMO summer programming
august 25
“You do not want to miss the fun (of Sports Camp, Athlete Leadership Programs University and Missouri Association of Student Councils Camp) staying at home playing video games,” SOMO athlete Michael Mohrmann said.
“It is a chance to meet new people, have fun for the summer and learn new things that can help you for your whole life.”
Tim Shriver and Roy Blunt visit Missouri
november 9
It didn’t take long for the Special Olympics Chairman and U.S. Senator to drop their formal titles and embrace their inner young athlete. The athletes’ infectious joy spread to Shriver and Blunt, who cheered them on as they made their way through the obstacle course and tried to keep up in intense rounds of Zombie Red Light Green Light. They shared in struggles, discovering how difficult it is to toss a scarf in the air and catch it on your stomach.
2016 was another fantastic year for Special Olympics Missouri and the 15,000 athletes who utilize our resources. We couldn't have offered all the kinds of programming without the help of our volunteers and donors, so watch the video and find out what your money allowed our athletes to do in 2016.
